Birthday Boy

I know, I know. It’s a little early to be celebrating Jameson’s birthday. We have a couple more weeks to go (Gosh, only a couple?! I am way behind on making those garlands)

But, he seemed to enjoy the walk behind/ride on toy at his friend Mark‘s so much that we asked nicely and Jameson’s grandparents were willing to go ahead and give him one of his gifts early last night.

Sasha wanted to help. That right there, that’s “9 years of teaching her to open her own gifts” Brian said. Yep, this puppy gets wrapped gifts too.

What is it!? Why, it’s …. wrapping paper! Yay!

Meanwhile, some assembly is required.

[10 Minutes Later…]

Grandma and grandpa (who took off work early for this special occasion) are thrilled. Jameson took to it right away, both forward and backward as you can see in this cute video.

I can tell that he’s going to be chasing after the puppy even more now…

I am not sure who had more fun, us or Jameson.

Thankful

We spent Wednesday through Sunday morning at my parents’ for Thanksgiving, and it was so nice to have time off from work for the extended visit. Jameson wasn’t teething or cranky, he was cheerful and well behaved and adorable the entire weekend. I’m so thankful!

The family spent Thursday relaxing, playing, eating and sleeping. I spent that time documenting most every moment, so here’s a play-by-play of our Thanksgiving Day (that rhymes, not on purpose):

Mom did the prepping and cooking.

Anyone else’s brother like to ruin good photo opps? That’s totally the dog show in the background. Jameson loved the dog show, it is probably the longest he’s ever looked at a television screen.

We got impatient for the olives and dug in right out of the can.

Everybody started getting hungry.

Grandpa is carving the turkey. Does anyone else have a photo like this? I promise you the knife was no where near his mouth in real life. It’s all about perspective!

The table is full and set. And the dog show is still on in the background.

Jameson’s first Thanksgiving meal! He had a little of everything: turkey (white meat only though); corn; noodles; green bean casserole; stuffing; even the jellied cranberry sauce (he liked it!).

Before dessert, some relaxing (and sleeping) occurred.

Jameson slept past our dessert, but he woke up ready to play. The helicopter was a hit with Jameson and a great distraction to get him to eat some baby food at meal times.

Thanksgiving round 2 for Jameson’s dinner. Then time for dessert!

He wasn’t a big fan of the pumpkin pie. Even whipped cream alone was apparently revolting. Who’s child is this?

Jameson enjoyed playing with “grandma toys” like the blocks, and even his great-grandma’s toys, like the building toy we made into a little car for him. He also enjoyed banging on the piano and getting into mischief. It was a great day, and finally time for him to sleep.

Which meant games for the rest of us. It ended poorly for me.

Luckily, Friday was a new day, and Jameson got to visit his friend Mark again. They’ve both grown so much! I can’t wait to share tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Is it too early to celebrate a little Christmas now? I have been listening to Christmas music for at least a week now, as soon as the radio stations started up.

On Tuesday, we made a last minute decision to try and see Santa before our long drive Wednesday to visit Jameson’s grandma and grandpa. There is a place about 45 minutes away from us that lets you take your own photos with Santa, but it ends on Sunday, so if we didn’t see him Tuesday we would’ve missed it entirely.

So we left work early, got everything ready to go, and picked up Jameson from daycare. Luckily, he hadn’t had a good second nap that day so he slept most of the drive.

We arrived with no Santa in sight, but he appeared about an hour later with Mrs. Claus in tow, and Jameson got to see his very first Santa Claus.

Santa was very nice, we were first in line so we got to spend a little time with him. Jameson tolerated him for a while, toward the end though we saw a little crumply face so we grabbed him before he started fussing. He was great, even though it was past his bed time!

In addition to Santa, we saw a lot of lovely trees, part of a big fundraiser they have every year. Jameson loved looking at the lights and people, and even a few dogs.

On Wednesday, we rushed around most of the morning getting ready for our 3-1/2 hour drive, and now we are arrived and enjoying flipping through ads, watching tv, and relaxing. I for one am really happy to be spending Thanksgiving here for the first time in several years.

Jameson is a little uncertain about his grandpa, but loves the two small dogs (particularly the one that likes to lick him because it means that he can get close to pet her). He is spending most of his time playing with the grandma toys rather than his own because they are more fun, of course! He’s even started this week putting toys into other toys, instead of just knocking down and dumping out. Smart boy!

I hope everyone is having a lovely Thanksgiving today and through the weekend!

Jameson’s First Art Projects

Last week, Jameson came home with his very first art project (okay, not very first– he’s had his hand prints and foot prints done). So I guess I mean, his very first creative art work, where he was free to mess to his heart’s content. He came home with a lovely blue painting, now on display on his dresser.

This inspired me to help Jameson make a birthday gift for his lovely Aunt Melissa who turned 30 on Friday!

Four tubes of finger paint later, Jameson was sitting in his high chair stripped of his shirt, ready to paint. I put four globs on paint on the paper and let him have at it.

He was kind of delicate at first, but he got into the swing of it pretty quickly.

He only tried to suck on his fingers twice, and eat the paper once. I rescued him all three times, and no paint ended up on his chest, so that is pretty much a win-win-win.

Aunt Melissa loved it! Grandma was a little jealous…

As an aside, I don’t think Jameson will be opening his own gifts on his birthday just one short month away. He was fascinated with eating the box and wrapping. Aunt Melissa has threatened to give him just an empty box on his birthday, which I’m sure he would love.

Troublemaker

Jameson has had a really hard time teething this past week and weekend. He has four teeth, two on bottom and two on top which are broken through but not all the way grown in. Now he is in process of breaking through two more teeth up top, and he’s taking this set pretty hard.

Contrary to this photo, he’s actually been really grumpy. So this is when we were checking for teeth and discovered that yes, there are two more making their way down.

My mother stayed with us overnight on Thursday night after going to a funeral. Sad times, but it was nice to get in a quick visit. We also visited with my uncle and aunt Carol, who just had knee replacement surgery a week ago and has been fairly housebound. I’m sure she enjoyed the visit, albeit brief.

He’s been up a lot at night, needing rocked to sleep which is very very unusual for him. Brian and I have been disagreeing about feeding him at night, but I think we’ve left it that Brian will feed him if he thinks he needs it and I will rock even if I think we should be holding firm on him getting to sleep by himself.

Jameson’s clearly in pain, and we’ll each do what we think will help him get back to sleep fastest. Which, in the end, is medicine. Advil and Tylenol, alternating, for the most effective pain relief according to our pharmacist neighbors. And it works.

Aside from causing us trouble sleeping, he is also becoming a bit of a troublemaker during the waking hours.

Yep, this child who is not really pulling himself up yet in the crib is climbing stairs. One stair. He’s not very coordinated yet.

He is also crawling everywhere, being told “no” quite often by the fireplace, and otherwise making mischief.

Consequently, we did some baby proofing this weekend. The outlets have covers on them now. They’re actually quite fancy, borrowed from a friend. They are tilted and go back in place with springs when removing an item from being plugged in. They’re kind of like this, but not as new or fancy. Also, we’ve finished the gate upstairs. We purchased a retract-a-gate and so far we really like it. We will have to make a decision about the downstairs gate though.

For now, we’ve been watching him on the stairs closely, finding it good practice for him to pull up. He’s only really reaching for things at his level like the stairs or ourselves when we’re on the floor with him. He isn’t quite getting the hang of pulling up from things with height like the end tables or couches.

We also have another troublemaker trying to wedge herself in corners to escape Jameson’s new mobility. Sasha turned 9 years old on October 1st. Happy birthday Sasha! We have fancy dinner planned for her this week in addition to the peanut butter bone and new toys that Brian’s parents got for her.

Family Gathering

On Sunday, we visited Brian’s great-grandma and family. It had been quite some time since our last visit. Last time, Jameson had been a little over 4 months old.

When we first arrived we handed Jameson over to her for a few photos. Jameson was pretty mellow, taking it all in.

Luckily he was so good for great-grandma! Come to find out, Jameson is having some people preferences now. He fussed with Aunt Terry and cousin Stacy… so Grandma stole him away.

Jameson loved playing in the grass and on the sidewalk. He kept trying to eat the grass now though so we had to watch him.

The whole family was there from Brian’s mother’s side of the family, which was so nice. We celebrated his Aunt Terry’s birthday and cousin Stacy’s engagement to Nick.

Already hard at work wedding planning for next August!

The weather was perfect (that early fall not-humid not-too-cold not-too-hot sort of weather). We spent the majority of our time outside.

Aunt Melissa and her boyfriend Jon entertained Jameson for a while while he played with a plastic red cup (again, why am I buying toys!?)

Aunt Kathy taught him how to bang on a pan with a spoon… at first he just wanted to eat the spoon, but he got the hang of it quick.

For supper we had lasagna, broccoli salad, beans, stuffed peppers, grilled chicken…

…and cake, and this amazingness of an angel food cake casserole.

This was Jameson’s first people food day! (Cheerios don’t count). Jameson got to try Brian’s parents’ famous lasagna (noodles and a little sauce, not the meat and cheese). He had eggs that morning too.  He did great.

He really wanted some chicken too, but we opted to just do two new things in one day.

Chicken

We came away with a bag of chestnuts from Aunt Kathy. We’re going to experiment with them. Apparently you can just microwave them and they were pretty tasty, but it will be fun to see what else we can do with them.

I’m pretty sure great-grandma had a blast. I know Jameson did (until we strapped him in for the ride home. I swear he knew it was going to be a long car ride. Poor Mr. Jameson)

Why Buy (Baby) Toys

I am wondering now, why I bought any toys for Jameson at all? Right now, he loves the floor vents, bathroom scale, and door stoppers. Oh, and dogs and dog toys.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlcs7dm50Xk]

My parents’ dogs Mayzie and Shiloh loved Jameson. Mayzie even gave him her weird toothy smile one morning when she saw him. But she wasn’t too sure what to do when Jameson kept going after her toys…

Flying/leaping/pouncing baby.

Got it! Notice Mayzie is no longer in the picture.

[Intermission]

And later…

Eying the prize…

Daddddd! Do I have to give Jameson my toy!?

Yes, yes you do.

P.S. I did take these toys away from Jameson as soon as he tried to eat them. Except one time, when I caught him chewing on a “lollipop” dog toy which must have had the most perfect, wonderful end to chew on. Oops…

Weekend Get-Away (from Dad)

This past weekend, Brian went on his yearly man trip with his two friends in Florida, while I went to my parents’ house with Jameson. It was great timing even though we had just seen them a couple weeks ago, because we also got to see my brother, Jameson’s Uncle Tyler (Uncle Ty has such a nice ring to it).

Tyler was only home for about two days before heading back to college for his final two quarters. He has interned at Disney twice and is going to be an engineer. (Yes, we are all kind of hoping he gets a job at Disney, that would be awesome, but no guarantees)

Jameson hadn’t really seen Uncle Ty in quite some time, so we had a mini photo shoot. Of course.

I love Jameson’s expression in the one above. That is one quirky look!

Oh, and… we just had to do the Lion King pose.

The weekend went by really fast, and we stayed busy even though we didn’t go anywhere else this time. We went on a couple family walks: Jameson and myself, plus my parents and both the dogs, and Tyler. I think we were quite a sight. Jameson was teething again, so he I really enjoyed these walks. I think they may have broken through, two top teeth. We’ll be able to tell soon, I know.

In the mornings it was a little brisk. Luckily, I remembered a jacket.

Jameson was partial to the kitchen floor. It is easier to crawl glide on. Plus, a lot of great new furniture to explore this time.

He is also really getting up on his knees a lot now. In particular, he was really motivated to get to the dogs.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh4M45M6vhI]

There are a few more videos up, of him crawling and Tyler attempting to feed him, here.

All of these things were truly wonderful, and home cooked meals every night were lovely. Thanks Mom!

I can’t believe how much he’s grown in just the past couple weeks. He’s now crawling to me when I pick him up from daycare, he’s happier now that he can move around, he’s actually exploring the world around him. He’s definitely a little boy (if I can be stereotypical for a moment). He loves getting “tossed” in the air, going upside down, watching the lawn mower, being outside. He’s going to be a (fun) handful, I can tell.

Wish I knew what color his eyes are going to be though!

Family Fair Fun, Food, Fabulous-ness

I hope everyone had a great weekend! I know I did. Friday, Brian and I took off and went to the fair with Jameson and my parents and sister (hence no blog post!)

It was a blast. We were there for almost 5 hours and Jameson didn’t complain at all, despite the heat wave and stroller sitting. He’s even giving us a (random, not on purpose) thumbs up! (P.S., do you see that hat? His head must have grown tremendously this month; it barely fits now)

We’ve always gone to this fair on the weekend since I was little, but going on a Friday was perfect with Jameson. It wasn’t crowded, and we even got shots of him with the traditional pumpkin. (No lines made it so much easier to take pictures with Jameson)

And, non traditional pumpkins.

Of course, it’s not a fair without seeing a few animals.

And, the men waiting for us women in the craft building.

Jameson started holding his own bottle consistently this week, and he was great about drinking it in the stroller. Meanwhile, Brian and I had fries, funnel cake, and I had Italian sausage. New this year is pulled pork on baked potato or nachos, so Brian and my parents tried that concoction. I wasn’t impressed with the BBQ sauce though.

By the end of the day, Jameson finally gave in to sleep. Those rosey cheeks are from the heat! We left soon after, and he napped the way home and after. What a champ!

After a fabulous Friday and Saturday, Jameson is having napping trouble today and yesterday after we went to the zoo, poor thing. What did you do this Labor Day weekend?

I Smell Fall

On Friday last week, the humidity dropped and whenever that happens I can smell fall on the breeze, no joke. (I can also smell the worms after the rain and sometimes pre-rain, like a sixth sense) It was confirmed for me this morning when I woke up and after my shower, it was still dark outside.

However, humidity is back up, so I guess that means 6 more weeks of summer? Wishful thinking.

In any case, I feel like I need to capture these small moments while I can, especially enjoying the outdoors (so I tell myself as I skip church for the 3rd week in a row)

But really, this Sunday we had some friends over after the rain killed our zoo plans (guess we really didn’t spend any time outdoors anyway), and in the evening we had dinner with Brian’s family for his mother’s birthday, which was a lot of fun.

Brian killed his diet for an evening of Italian debauchery, and I enjoyed a heavenly mushroom ravioli.

We discussed the benefits of having extra large paintings, like the above classy man behind Becky, made of us individually to fill the awful space over our bed which currently has an awful off-centered painting. I think somebody nixed the idea though, maybe Brian’s dad.

Jameson was almost-but-not-quite-a-nightmare. We came prepared with highchair cover and plenty of not-too-noisy toys, he had eaten and had been changed. But it was close to bed time and there were too many people to look at and holler at, and maybe make some pterodactyl noises at. It was still a blast.

Oh, I also went shopping again on Saturday and on Sunday. At least this time, I realized I needed to do a thorough cleaning of the closet.

After 5 years, I realized that maybe I will never fit into some of those clothes again. The pain was made palatable though by the booty I came back with from Kohls and the outlets. What is it about walk in closets that make you feel like you can indeed store everything forever?

There is a gap there now, and I emancipated a good number of hangers which meant I could throw away a bunch of those clear plastic store hangers. Or are you supposed to recycle those? Does anyone recycle those?

Anyway, it was a nice relaxing weekend, before the next weekends into September which will be filled with trips and events, and even our first overnight together without Jameson. Whatever will we do with ourselves?

On our list now for the rest of summer are just a few must-do’s:

  • go canoeing/fake kayaking in those kayaks with huge openings so I don’t drown if I tip over
  • go on a little hike to where we got engaged
  • go ride some rollercoasters

Very do-able, right? As long as we get 6 more weeks of summer, anyway.
