Playdates and Friends

The weekend before last, Jonathan came over for a visit on Saturday afternoon, followed by a beautiful Sunday with neighbors and even the grandchildren of our other next door neighbors popping over to play before my celebratory birthday dinner.

After exhausting themselves outside, they came in and JP and Lisa offered to help try Coraline on the bottle (relatively unsuccessfully again…). Jonathan and Jameson watched a little tv, mesmerized.

Brian brought out the Elmo Telephone app on the ipad which is always a hit, and then a little cookie monster. No one wanted to leave!

Sunday, we brought out the bounce house again for Jameson and Lily. It is nice to have it in the backyard this year now that we have a yard again!

Brian’s parents and sister came over to celebrate my birthday over dinner. Coraline just loved being outside enjoying the evening air before dinner time.

Both neighbors came over. The older couple on the other side of us had their adult children and grandkids over, and it was wonderful to see the swing set fully in use!

After our dinner, it was time to sing! When Brian said we didn’t have any candles, Jameson ran to get a regular yellow candle on the entryway table. He was so excited to be helpful! So we lit that candle and Jameson helped me blow it out.

Another year gone!

Zoo Trip with Aunt Carol

The animal Jameson told us he wanted to see this time was a polar bear (last time was a zebra). We did see the polar bear, but not until the very end!

First we saw the elephants, and for the first time we happened to be there exactly when they were doing the Elephant Crossing (rotating the elephants from one side of the exhibit to the other, crossing close in front of us!)

The elephants lift up their trunks and open their mouths for a treat when they are finished, which was pretty cool to see.

It was nice that it wasn’t too hot; many of the animals were active. It did get warmer than I originally expected though since the rain held off and the sun came out!

We went with my Aunt Carol which was great since I don’t have a double stroller. It would’ve been hard impossible to push two strollers by myself!

Jameson was very into climbing onto the fences. We would stop, he was request to get out of the stroller and climb up; and when we went to move on, he wanted to buckle himself in by himself.

We stopped here underneath flowering trees for me to feed Coraline, and Jameson was great while we waited. He had an applesauce snack. We also heard the wolves suddenly start howling like crazy, so Aunt Carol took him to go look at them. We usually can’t see them, but apparently they were visible and calling out!

The sloth bear was great. He got up and rotated himself, slinging his head over the log like that as we were watching.

And finally we got to see the polar bear!

We stopped and ate subs at a picnic area which was surprisingly calm since there were schools at the zoo this weekday. It’s so nice to pack up a little lunch so we don’t have to buy anything and just stop when we’re hungry.

After the zoo visit, we played outside with Lily for a while. Coraline slept most of the day this way in her stroller, so later in the afternoon I made her get up and stretch out and play inside for a bit. Aunt Melissa came over in the evening to help with bedtime since Brian had a work dinner. It was such a lovely day to have Jameson home and play.

Visit from Uncle Tyler

Jameson asked if Uncle Tyler was coming back several times after he left, he enjoyed his time with his uncle so much!

They watched movies and tv shows together, and Uncle Tyler got introduced to Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, a replacement for the childhood series Mr. Rogers Neighborhood that Jameson just adores.

Brian and Uncle Tyler also found the time to put together Jameson’s new swing set on Saturday, though we didn’t get to spend as much time on it over the weekend as we would’ve like since it was rainy on Sunday!

They watched a lot of Disney movies too while Brian worked on getting materials for our garden and beginning the building. I figured it was the perfect time to work on building the garden so that we’d have a spare set of hands to either watch Jameson or help Brian out when needed! It worked out even better than expected, since Coraline was so needy over the weekend.

Sunday it was time to load dirt up into the garden, and Jameson insisted on helping out, even though it was lightly raining almost the whole time and a little chilly.

This photo of them and the wheelbarrows just cracks me up. Jameson had trouble loading up his shovel with dirt, so Uncle Tyler was happy to help, but Jameson insisted on pushing his own wheelbarrow back and forth to the garden.

We didn’t actually complete the dirt-loading process, but with Tyler’s assistance we got it much closer to completion than we would’ve on our own! (That is, on Brian’s own!) Don’t worry, we fed Uncle Tyler well for all his trouble, with breakfast casserole, ribs and spaghetti dinner. Although I think he’d agree that the hardest part was keeping up with Jameson!

Uncle Tyler even wiped a few noses for Jameson by the time he left. When Jameson saw me take another photo of Coraline and Uncle Tyler, he insisted on one for himself too.

Toddler Jameson

My two favorite boys!

Jameson continues to amaze us daily. He is repeating everything we say, and we find ourselves explaining things more (this isn’t just a nut, it’s a cashew, and things aren’t just broke, they’re loose or missing batteries etc.). While I’m sure he doesn’t understand the reasons, the fact that I’m giving him new and different reasons for the way something must be actually makes him more accepting.

Jameson is currently responding well to “last one” or “one more”, and while he will try for extras (like one more slide! and one more run! and one more water! goodnight Sasha, go potty, etc), most of the time he doesn’t have a meltdown when the requests are denied after the announcement of “last one” has been spoken. Bedtime is currently going well, much better than pre-baby Coraline’s arrival.

However, we have been introduced to Scary Things. He will announce something is scary, and usually it doesn’t seem to have a particular reason. He saw Cars 2 (or rather, 15 minutes of it) and announced it was scary and that it was over.

Tonight, he heard a noise, which I told him was a loud car outside, and he told me that was scary and wanted to sit in my lap and asked three or four times later about the loud car, to which I reassured him it was gone. He has occasionally requested his small lamp on, but I insist on keeping it off since he has his stars, nightlight, and he has recently enjoyed his glow worm again.

He occasionally wants up, to be held, or “wrapped up” with his blankets, though he is most independent. When he injures himself, he most frequently requests his small lovey blanket and bear rather than a kiss from mom.

The blankets are slowly being called balankeys rather than leekys, which I am a little sad to see go. He also has a few more “guys” as they’re called. It currently consists of 2 bigger blankets, 1 small lovey size blanket which is sometimes 2 on the weekends when the one from school comes home, 1 bigger teddy bear called Bobby which was Brian’s as a child, and his lovey size bear, plus a little Elmo.

Jameson is saying “sorry” a lot, for things he doesn’t need to say sorry for. He doesn’t seem to quite understand the concept yet, though I appreciate the effort! He is also saying “achoo” literally, expecting us to say “bless you” back as if he’s sneezed, which is pretty funny. He seems to like that joke and loves to be silly.

We are currently working on clean up and being more consistent about having him clean up his own toys.

Can you believe he still fits in the bumbo? Around the waist, he is still comfortable in 18 month clothes, though length and tops are definitely 24 months to 2T. He is wearing size 7 shoes and has been particular about picking out new ones (they are the same as the last ones, by his choice). He can put on and take off his own pants, underwear, socks and shoes. He can’t do shirts himself just yet, nor buttons or zippers unless they’re already started.

Slowly we are approaching potty training at night; he is frequently dry overnight though we still put him in pull ups then. He tells us in the morning if he’s had an accident and thinks he is wet (though he isn’t). We haven’t had an accident in weeks, though we haven’t had the opportunity to test him in public restrooms for some time.

Life is great for him right now, and we finally brought his bike outside which he can ride as long as he has a helmet on. He loves to go from his driveway, down the sidewalk to Lily’s house and back, over and over and over. We can’t wait to put up his very first swing set in the backyard this week and are enjoying the warmer weather.

Two Kids, One Mom

On Monday, we had our first nice day in a while, so I decided to be brave and keep Jameson out of school all day and had two kids by myself all day for the first time.

The morning went okay, I got Jameson up while Coraline was still content, but she quickly decided she wanted to eat, so I had to let her cry some while I got Jameson his breakfast. He was excellent though while I fed her, watching tv next to me and needing nothing. She didn’t really want to nap after that (or I couldn’t give her the time she needed to help get her to sleep), so I kept her awake until it was time to go to the playground!

We met friends Lisa and Vivienne at the playground mid morning, and they ran around the playground for an hour without pause except to swing. I had Coraline in the stroller, but I did bring my carrier in case I would need to follow Jameson closer. However, he was great at the playground and didn’t try to jump off of any high platforms. He particularly loved running up and down the ramps and the swing.

He also spied another little boy running around in the grass outside the playground, and of course he had to do the same.

I even managed to pack us a lunch! We ate there, while Vivienne slept in her mom’s arms. She passed out in the swing! Jameson asked to go play as soon as he was done, and he ran around for another 20 minutes or so before we headed home so I could make sure I fed Coraline before she got fussy. She slept the entire time.

After she ate, we watched some tv for a little while so Jameson could relax a bit since he skips naps at home. Coraline napped in her swing and I even got some photos edited!

Then we went back outside for more! By evening, I had Coraline strapped in the carrier and took Jameson on a walk in his stroller, a new umbrella stroller we got for him. He doesn’t get to ride in it much, and he enjoyed a nice walk. After dinner, we played a little with Lily outside before finally crashing.

Coraline was awake for most of the evening and loved being outside. She was great in the carrier though complained a bit toward the end of our walk. I couldn’t believe how smoothly the day went, though I have developed a new appreciation for those who do this day in and out everyday. As it was, I needed the tv to occupy Jameson so that I could do some things I needed to do; and I’m not sure how I would feel if I felt obligated to help educate Jameson. Luckily I spent the day just doing and having fun!

But really, it will have to be a nice day when I do it again. Jameson needs that outside time to blow off some energy!

Spring Ahead Weekend

This weekend really did feel like spring, so much so that I didn’t even mind losing the hour to gain the daylight in the evenings. It was in the 50’s and 60’s all weekend long, sunny and amazingly enough, no rain!

Saturday, we had a few errands to run. Now that we don’t have swimming lessons anymore (at least until the fall), we have regained our Saturday mornings. First, Jameson slept in until about 9 (pre time change!), which was fabulous. Jameson didn’t seem too bummed about his restricted breakfast (no yogurt, since he had to come home on Thursday and stay home Friday due to diarrhea). He enjoyed his “special juice” of gatorade.

We stopped first at Target for some necessities, then a trip to Jo-Ann Stores, where I bought some fabric for my very first official backdropped photoshoot for baby girl.

I purchased this lovely home decor fabric, which shouldn’t reflect light and should fade out in a very nice way, matching perfectly with one of the newborn hats I purchased months ago. I just need to iron it… and Brian needs to get a hold of some PVC pipe for the structure of the backdrop stand.

We then did a dry run to the hospital. With Jameson and our scheduled induction, we casually arrived at the hospital with plenty of time. We don’t know what it will be like this time, so we opted to circle the hospital grounds once to see where the main entrance and ER entrances are.

After having the hardest time finding a place to eat lunch, we stopped at O’Charley’s. Jameson got in a half hour nap on the road, and was a pleasant lunch companion. Brian and Jameson played outside and took their first “spring walk” of the season while I putzed around indoors. Honestly, I can’t even remember what I did.

Sunday was even better! Our errands on Sunday took us to Harbor Freight to look at tools, and then to one of Brian’s go-to stores for beer-making-supplies. We followed that up with an amazing lunch at a new, recently opened joint with hand-tossed, wood-fired over pizzas. Jameson was a little less than pleasant this go-round, but the food more than made up for it.

After I enjoyed a lovely warm bath at home, I joined Jameson, Lily and Brian and Curtis outside for the rest of the day. I even took a few photos!

Jameson and Lily were quite the pair. He has been requesting to play with Lily every evening since!

While sitting with their juice boxes, Jameson suddenly turned to Lily and requested a high five, followed by “knuckles”. I am not sure when he picked up on knuckles like that, we have only done it a few times, but it was hilarious.

When I took photos, Lily and Jameson squealed “cheese” for nearly a whole minute, looking at each other and laughing.

They enjoyed chase, and played in their cars…

Check out that tongue!

… Drawing with chalk (Lily claimed everything she drew was a hotdog, and Jameson claimed the drawings were chicken nuggets and big poop)

… and watching Brian wash the car. Jameson was excited to help dad do a bit of the washing too; he wasn’t too neat about it and ended up all wet.

Later in the evening, we went on a walk with the neighbors, and another of our neighborhood friends happened to be walking and joined us as well. Jameson and Lily held hands. Wish I had had my camera for that one!

Jameson did have an accident when we returned, which he was very distraught over. He has been doing so well with the potty training that we are calling him day trained. He was simply caught up in the excitement! Earlier in the day, he requested to go inside to go potty, so he is definitely there. We are pleasantly surprised with his earlier-than-expected progress!

It was a wonderful weekend, and Jameson was simply exhausted by the end of the evening. I am excited for the return of warm weather (and disappointed that it’s not in the forecast now for at least another week–just cold and rain!).

P.S. Last night, we did end up at the hospital for a false alarm; we were back home about 3 hours later around midnight. Who would’ve thought that contractions aren’t just supposed to be 5 minutes apart, but also needed to be “strong”? So even though I did see an increase in strength from when they first started, they aren’t getting strong enough for labor. I am having regular, mild contractions that aren’t doing anything… still waiting!

July: Elmo, Juice, Stuff

Last week, Jameson got his very first bloody nose.

I don’t have any photos of it, because it was a bloody nose. No, I did NOT go running for the camera. Yes, I DID think about it (and thought about artistic ways to take pictures of bloody kleenix. Officially insane). Instead, Brian and I argued about which way was better, head forward or back, and having seen some pretty awful bloody noses (and knowing that we can’t trust Brian’s childhood memory), I won.

Head forward. Nose pinched, but we didn’t do that since Jameson was bawling. Not quit sure what Jameson did, since I was doing dishes and Brian was in the living room, but he tripped and fell flat on his face in the kitchen.

Oh, I did have Brian tweak his nose to make sure it wasn’t broken. Also, I was thankful that we didn’t lose any more teeth. And it was over in about 5 minutes, with Elmo watching and some juice.

I’m in a bit of a rut here, blogging-wise and photography-wise. I went to edit my photos from the zoo and our visit to great-grandma, and then I stopped. The photos I took seemed uninspired and obligatory, much the way I’ve been feeling lately. The real camera has spent most of the week put away, in lieu of my iphone which is so easy and quick. I’ll get to them, soon.

It’s kind of a burned out feeling, like what I’ve been doing has started to feel like work and less like play. And this is important to want to enjoy recording life events and Jameson’s milestones and achievements, so I’m trying to put a no-pressure attitude on it to return to my old self.

So, if you’ve been missing my posts, I’m sorry, I know, I think I’ll look back on July and be like, did we do anything in July!?

We did:

  • We got new office furniture. I’m going to take a photo, but we’re not really done setting it up yet and some of the old stuff is in other rooms, but maybe I’ll just take an in progress picture and show you the awesome-ness that is now our office. Soon, I promise.
  • Brian went to Vegas, I went to my parents.
  • Sasha went to the vet, all checked out fine. She has a cyst on her eyelid we are watching. She is turning 10 this year, which I think means we need to have a dog birthday party!
  • We got UVerse installed, so there was a lot of Olympic and recorded TV watching to catch up
  • We finally saw friends Matt & Carrie’s new house, while Jameson and Nicholas played (together even! It was cute)
  • Went to the farmers market a few times
  • Watched fireworks from our porch
  • Went to the zoo with the neighbors
  • Watched my gladiolas bloom (clippings inside are so nice) and my hibiscus plant explode.
  • Dinner at grandma and grandpas
  • Visit to great-grandma’s and seeing Brian’s side of the family
  • Also, on the work side of things, our interns last day was last week, and one of my teammates has returned from maternity leave. Things are looking up on that front, so I am thankful for that.

P.S. Excuse my bra strap. Classy.

August Miscellany

It’s hard to believe it’s really August. Sorry I’ve been MIA. Here are my obligatory excuses:

  1. Olympics
  2. Converting from DISH to Uverse this weekend (hence, watching all my recorded shows)

Sorry, I couldn’t think of any others. Is it sad that my excuses are all television??!

I have photos in back log: This past weekend was full of fun with friends and family, but I haven’t gotten around to editing them, hence no posts about them, because I’ve been enjoying a ridiculous amount of TV time after Jameson goes to bed.

I think that August will be a great month for us, and for Jameson too: He will be starting in the next room at daycare on the 20th this month. We are blessed that he has a teacher who wants to follow him (she is his favorite, and he is hers), so I think that the transition will be easier for him than it would otherwise. His friend Nathan, who has been out of daycare for the summer, will return soon too!

Every night when we come home now, Jameson wants to either play outside or watch Elmo. I’m happy to oblige: He will sit on my lap to watch Sesame Street for nearly 10 minutes before squirming his way out. It’s adorable, and I’m staying guilt-free since it’s Sesame Street, he’s spending time just resting with me, and he never watches TV at daycare. WIN WIN WIN.

(for the GOLD: I have already requested to borrow an Elmo costume for Halloween from a friend who’s daughter wore it last year. And, I’ve bought some Christmas or birthday presents, you are now in awe of everything I can get done when I’m not blogging now aren’t you?)

We got him new shoes for daycare which are sandals with covered toes that can get wet, and he loves them. Doesn’t want to take them off in the evening. It’s adorable.

The neighbors had their new baby yesterday, and their mystery baby was a BOY! Peyton. In a year, I can see them all running around the backyard (which maybe by then will have grass, seriously).

So much to be thankful for.

Wine Making: Racking & Clarification

It was about a month ago now, but we did step 4 of our wine making process. Soon we will be transferring it to bottles!

Before anything, we tested it and tasted it. It was very distinctly wine now, and pretty clear even before this step!

In the background is one of the beers Brian is brewing (hence the nice golden color)

Here was our set up to transfer the wine into the next glass jug, leaving the sediment behind to further clarify the wine.

Transferring the wine like this is called racking. We were careful to leave the sediment behind.

Then, we added in metabisulphite and some extra wine to top it off. To age the wine more than 6 months, we needed to add a metabisulphite powder to prevent the wine from oxidizing.

The extra wine was added because we needed to be at this level in the jug:

And that’s it! It’s ready for bottling after 14-21 days from this step, and once bottled, we can age it for 6 months to a year or more.

Here are our previous steps:

Step 1: Primary Fermentation

Step 2: Secondary Fermentation & Step 3:  Stabilising and Clearing

Final Day: Big Basin & Santa Cruz, Day 5

We debated about stopping at one final winery in the morning before leaving for Big Basin, but since the drive was so long (2-1/2 hours), we opted not to. Instead, we had a final omelet breakfast, spent an hour packing our “souvenirs” (yes, an hour, which you will see why at the end!), and then were on our way.

Why Big Basin? I did quite a bit of research on the redwood forests nearby; and while I really did want to go further inland to see the true giants, we didn’t have the time. Big Basin was my compromise to seeing more of the trees without taking too much time out of the trip.

The drive to Big Basin was a heart pounding affair along raised highways and heavy traffic back around San Francisco, followed up by the windiest, hilliest, most nauseating mountain road I have ever been on.

Was it worth it?

Well, the trees were bigger than Muir Woods. They were a touch less picturesque (though that could also be from the time of day), but they were obviously older and in more of a traditional wooded park.

They were also much wider than Muir. I have always wanted to hug one of these trees.

We did the Redwood Loop Walk, an educational short walk by the main park entrance.

With no further plans for our final day, we decided to head into Santa Cruz so I could see and walk in the Pacific Ocean. Luckily, like our journey to Muir Woods, the way out was less nauseating than the way in.

We stopped at Parish Publick House for lunch (thanks to another successful Yelp search), where I had the best Shepherds Pie I have ever had outside of Ireland (and maybe including). Brian had the Irish Dip, a special sandwich like a French dip with an Irish cheese and Jameson dipping sauce.

They had an extensive beer list, and Brian was excited to try Deschutes Hop Henge and Black Butte, both of which he enjoyed. For myself, I enjoyed the casual atmosphere, pool playing in the back, and the simple wildflowers placed in Lagunitas mason jar glasses on the tables. The rustic flooring was charming.

Santa Cruz was beautiful on the nearly cloudless day. We walked down the pier though and the wind made it pretty chilly. The pier is long, and midway through, there is a staircase down a level, and there are sea lions, basking in the sunlight! I had to take a video as another sea lion swam up and greeted the others.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMyIY3vrHLE]

At the very end of the pier, I looked out at the ocean and then straight down, and I saw this:

More sea lions, lying across a single plank of wood all along the end.

We walked back and walked along the sand up to the amusement park along the boardwalk.

(Proof I was really there)

We didn’t ride any rides, though it was a crowded and happy amusement park; I did get some ice cream though.

The sun was starting to go down, so we drove up to the lighthouse for a final sightsee before making our way to the airport and home.

I was pleasantly surprised to capture some surfers, hopping over the fencing for us tourists, ignoring or maybe just taking to heart the warnings about being cautious, as this place has seen many surfer’s deaths.

Then it was time to turn our backs to Santa Cruz and toward the airport. We did one final stop when we got gas. We didn’t get out of the car, but I had fun seeing the google maps “placemarker” and their street sign.

We were taking the red eye out of San Francisco, so we had plenty of time to eat dinner and have another Buena Vista Irish Coffee before our flight.

We arrived home early Tuesday morning, and I worked from home that day, unfortunately. Meanwhile, Brian unpacked our souvenirs.

All of that made it home successfully on the airplane, no breakage. 6 mason jars, 6 wine glasses, and if I’m counting correctly that is 7 bottles of beer and 9 bottles of wine (one of which had been opened and re-corked without spilling).

Brian was the master of that packing, and the key was packing a suitcase within a suitcase on the way there, surrounded by bubble wrap. Glasses were carried on, alcohol was checked in. The handheld weight meter that Brian’s parents loaned us was a help too. We hit the exact limit on both checked bags.

Mastermind, I tell you.

And there you have it, the end of our 5 day long trip that felt more like 7 or 8 and somehow left us feeling rejuvenated despite the exhausting walking and travel. Thanks, California, it was fun!

P.S. If you were wondering in all this how many times we called to check on Jameson, the answer is really just once. And we were told he was singing “ee ii ee ii oh”, seeing family at a bridal shower, and keeping his grandparents busy. If it wouldn’t get me in trouble, I would say that I didn’t miss him much at all, simply because I was confident that he was having a blast without us.

Though I also know that the last Monday and Tuesday at daycare, he asked for mommy and daddy a lot throughout that day. So maybe he missed us too.
