Advent Stockings

On par with my usual crafting timelines, here I am over a year later finally completing the project that I started talking about last year. I purchased a set of stockings and mittens that look knit and are backed with felt from Factory Direct Craft last year. This year they are hanging from the garland on my stairway.

I originally wanted to use the Jesse tree story to be the basis for my ornaments, but found that those types of symbolic ornaments are hard to come by. Instead, I ran across these cute ornaments from Hobby Lobby on the cheap, and decided to make my own nativity scene animals to go with them.

Ornaments

The ornaments from Hobby Lobby looked like polymer clay. I’ve never used polymer clay (at least not since I was a kid) but I figured I could handle making a few animals. I bought Sculpey III clay from Amazon, and there it sat for another few months before I finally sat down, the night before they needed done, and started my clay animals.

Animals

My first animals were the camels, and you may be able to tell. I was least happy with how these turned out, but I doubt Jameson will care. This clay was little harder to work with than some of the other colors.

Camel Ornaments

I had a lot of trouble keeping my nails from scarring the clay, which you can see in these close ups. From farther away though, you can’t tell.

The next day, I made all the rest of the animals in the same amount of time it took me to make just two the day prior, about an hour and fifteen minutes. The rest of the animals were easier. I used pictures online of other polymer clay animals to get the basic idea of what I wanted for my own.

Horse Ornaments

Donkey Ornament

In order to make them ornaments, I needed to bake them with an eye-pin in them (perfectly safe to bake it with metal at the 275 degrees that Sculpey III clay requires). To make sure the eye-pins don’t come out, you bend the eye-pin in the shape of an L before pushing them into the clay.

Sheep Ornaments

The sheep were my favorite to make. I started with a base white ball and made lots of little balls to stick on around it, with more balls for head and feet in black. The eyes were hardest, because the shapes needed to be so small.

I carefully put them in the over on an older metal pan and made sure to use an in-oven thermometer to verify the temperature was 275 degrees. I had read that temperature is key for properly cured polymer clay and an oven thermometer is recommended. I had my oven between 285-290 to keep it at 275 for the duration of the baking, which was about 45 minutes for these guys.

I used cross stitch thread for hanging them, since that is easily and securely knotted. (I had first tried a thin beading string but it wasn’t secure enough) All told, there are about 10 snowflakes interspersed with nativity animals and the figurines.

Advent Stockings

Jameson enjoyed opening the first two (since I was a day late). I made sure an animal was in one of them, since that is quite a bit more exciting than a snowflake. He’s not good at hanging, but he will show us where he wants his ornaments hung.

In addition to our advent stockings, we are also doing the chocolates, opening one of the small cardboard doors each day. We got great chocolate for it, each individually wrapped, from Harry & David. I was expecting I might be able to have some since Jameson hasn’t been too into candy, but apparently he knows the good stuff when he sees it and is eating it all.

He was a little hyper Monday night, running and jumping around like a maniac and taking a good 45 minutes to fall asleep. Last night we tried giving it to him right after work in hopes of toning the hyper down right before bed, but it only worked so-so. Turns out that giving a toddler chocolate in the evening is not a great idea! We may have to move to mornings if things don’t get better, haha.

Jameson has also been asking nearly every night, about 3 times in a row, who all the nativity scene people are in our set. “Dis?” Goat. “Dis?” Cow. He knows the baby, and has started identifying Mary and Joseph and Jesus’s mom and dad. Or just “mommy” and “daddy”. Too funny!

Trim the Tree

Saturday it was beautiful out, and we got our Christmas tree. We like to get real trees (I in particular, since I grew up with fake trees, still think it’s a novelty. I think Brian would be happy with either).

Picking out a Tree

This year Jameson helped pick out the tree (or really, just touched them all). He loved watching the worker cut our tree and kept saying “cut” over and over. However, when it came to trimming the tree on Sunday, he was a little less helpful.

I had a whole box of ornaments put away just for Jameson to be able to hang, but you know he didn’t want to hang those ornaments. He wanted to help with all the breakable, shiny and glittery ornaments. He was pretty good with them though for the most part, and handed them over nicely after getting threatened with a timeout once.

Also, he was a big fan of the small bell garland and tried it on, running around with it.

Bell Garland

Brian entertained Jameson for a good while with a collapsible ornament. Jameson kept trying to blow it over, and while Brian tried to get him to kiss it to help it back up, mostly it was just slobber everywhere!

Now that Sasha is only on one floor, she took over the Christmas tree corner, so we had to find a new corner! I rather like the tree near the window now, and it seems a little more spacious. So here it is, in all it’s glory!

Thanksgiving at Home

This Thanksgiving, we spent our time at home. It was nice to have 4 full days off with no real obligations! We made big changes for Jameson, which I’ll share soon, and spent Thanksgiving dinner at Brian’s parents.

At grandma’s house, Jameson has duplicate versions of his loveys at home. So there are two blankets and one bear, just like at home. Our blankets at home though are getting a little more ratty than these… Jameson loves to lay his head on the soft blankets.

Jameson is becoming quite the demanding little toddler, but his grandparents and Aunt Melissa don’t mind! When he said “sit!” they sat.

Time for dinner! I broke out the bib that I bought for him last year, which he never got to wear since I forgot it then.

Jameson enjoyed stealing green beans from grandma’s plate. He was a pretty good sport about trying most everything but the turkey, and he particularly loved grandma’s homemade cranberry relish.

Dinner was early enough that there was plenty of time to play after.

Jameson wanted to help re-inflate the beach ball…

Which they used to stand on.

The best games are at grandma and grandpa’s house, for sure.

Thanks Giving & Santa

Just like last year, we visited Santa just before Thanksgiving! This year, Jameson had a lot more awareness and told us that, yes, he wanted to see Santa when we asked.

Santa beckoned him close (we were first in line) and asked if Jameson would like to see him. Jameson said yes, but didn’t want to sit on his lap, so Brian sat down with him.

“What would you like for Christmas?” Silence; dad prompted him with “cars” and Jameson repeated after him. Santa suggested trucks too and Jameson agreed that sounded good also, repeating “trucks”.

Jameson said “thank you” quietly and we left. So charming! We went upstairs then to the tree festival, which Jameson dragged us through very quickly. He ran his little excited skipping step, and he even got to meet a couple dogs.

All told, he went to bed just an hour later than usual, though dinner was a bit rough with a lot of food throwing! It was a great time.

We told him he needed to be good so he could see grandma today, so he has been on his best behavior. Hope everyone else gets to enjoy a family-filled Thanksgiving today!

Trick or Treat

Sunday was our city’s trick or treat night, which had been delayed from the original Wednesday evening plan due to Hurricane Sandy. I didn’t mind, because it was another day to enjoy Jameson’s Elmo costume!

He got right in, excited to go outside. Brian’s mom brought over a foam glow stick, which he ran around outside with while we were waiting for Lily.

Lily was a fairy princess, and rode in the wagon with Jameson. She wasn’t sure about Elmo at first I think!

It was another brisk night, so I was thankful for his warm costume as we all headed up the road away from the fire that Brian built in the driveway. We all went, Aunt Melissa, Brian, myself and grandma with Lily and her mom. A whole herd of us! Grandpa stayed to man the fire and pass out candy.

When there were a bunch of houses close together, we let Jameson and Lily out and we walked them up to the doorways. Last year, most people were outside at the end of their driveways, but the bitter cold drove a lot more people inside this year.

Jameson did well saying “thank you” but didn’t say “trick or treat” at all. He was still cute; as we walked to the next house, I asked him if he wanted more treats and he’d repeat after me “mo’ tweat”.

It was all the more cute since he didn’t really know what treats were! He would take out treats in his bucket, give them a little shake and put them back in.

Except for the sucker, he knew that one and gnawed on the end of it all the way home. We managed to get to about 8 houses or more!

Our last stop was our own house of course! We were about to head inside when a group of trick or treaters came up. Jameson saw them get their candy and decided he wanted to trick or treat at our house too.

He clearly knew this was his show here though because he had no problem reaching into the bowl to pick one out himself!

Jameson had dinner, and while grandma and Aunt Melissa put him to bed,  I came back outside to make some s’mores and enjoy the fire before calling it a night. We didn’t have many trick or treaters at our house this year or last, since we live on the outskirts of the neighborhood, but that just means more leftovers for me!

We offered Jameson a kitkat last night, but he returned it, not liking it. Score more candy for me again!

Halloween Party

I was so excited to attend his school’s Halloween party on Halloween since I haven’t spent much time there with him. I loved seeing all the other kids, him in costume, and watching the teacher/student interactions.

When I arrived, Jameson jumped up out of Cara’s lap and over to me. We were waiting to start the parade, so we sang some songs and then did a dance. Jameson seemed a little out of sorts, already in his costume.

Jameson put his blanket on the cots and all the kids lined up and out to the central area to begin the parade through the rooms.

Okay, it was really scattered. It must have been their ages, but there wasn’t a lot of structure to our parade. I took hold of Jameson’s hand since he seemed a little lost and we went through just a couple rooms before returning back to ours.

I think that he was a little warm in the costume actually, and when we got back to the classroom he cried a little trying to unzip himself from the costume, poor thing!

I helped him out of the costume, and everything was immediately better. Also, it was snack time!

They gave the kids cups with a little apple juice in it, and Jameson did really well! I was impressed, since at home he was dumping water on the floor from cups on purpose.

After about 3 refills (about half a cup of straight apple juice), I suggested maybe he might want water next instead hehe! 😉

And here’s Mr. Nathan again, smirking when he saw me taking photos of him!

I also got a picture of his Star of the Month board. He was showcased during October, so Halloween was his very last day on the board.

And I finally captured a smile from Jameson! I commented to another mom there that I could finally put away my camera and she laughed and said she does the same thing. We are all the same, and all different, us moms!

I did escape before snack time was over so that I didn’t need to clean up. I had to get to work, and also change into my own costume.

Here is my team, much bigger than just a few months ago. It was a good time, and we walked into the work cafeteria blasting some Spice Girls.

Halloween Festivities Weekend

Halloween started off last Friday with our neighborhood party! They have the party every year, though this is the first year we’ve participated. Neighbors either pay $5 or host a “station” at their house for kids to come visit.

Okay, the first time Jameson put this costume on, it was a fight! He screamed like we were cutting off his legs, poor thing. Brian and I looked at each other, and did what any good parent would do (right?) and we forced him into it. I’m sure we were both thinking “It’ll be good for you! Fun! Come on!”

He did end up enjoying himself, and the costume was perfect for this awful hurricane-generated rain that we’ve had since that Friday through today still. Still! He stayed warm and dry the entire time, and he loved staying up late. Jameson got a little slap happy at the end.

First stop was a photo station and then pumpkin ring toss. Jameson got a spider as his prize. Oh, and he also had a wonderful new eyeball necklace that lit up from the party favor station when we arrived too. He loves that necklace!

This is Nathan and Jameson, his buddy from school. Nathan was dressed as Thing 1, and his sister as Thing 2. We stopped at their house since they had a s’more station! The boys just had some graham crackers.

We also hopped aboard the hay ride tractor, which Jameson loved. He stared at the tractor the entire time and waved bye bye when we finished.

One of the neighbors is in a real Kiss cover band and had a photo booth there as well. Jameson refused until Brian picked him up. This photo is hilarious!

At the end of the evening, the snack station opened and Lily stopped by for a bit. This photo of Jameson climbing on her stroller made me laugh. He wanted her to come out and play! The night was getting late though and it was cold and misty, so we headed back home shortly after that.

On Saturday, we went to the Akron Zoo for Boo at the Zoo with JP, Lisa & Jonathan.

At least Jameson didn’t mind the costume as much this time, but by the face he’s making in all the pictures you wouldn’t know it. He seems very concerned!

But mostly I think he has a solemn face when he is taking things in and absorbing new experiences.

We rode the merry-go-round, which Jameson loved! He didn’t want to leave or say bye to the polar bear, he had so much fun!

The Akron Zoo is smaller, so we made the rounds pretty quick. I took a few inside, but then it started to rain so I didn’t get any more outdoor photos.

I love how he looks when you take a picture of the back of the costume, with the eyeballs up. Also, yes, he is wearing his eyeball necklace from the previous night again.

After the zoo, we went to Luigi’s for lunch, which I had been craving, so that was perfect! Jameson and Jonathan did really well with dinner, and Jameson ate rigatoni though no ravioli.

He finally ate filled pasta for the first time at daycare the other day; they said he ate it all (either that, or it was all on the floor and they couldn’t tell what he ate, right?!)

Due to Hurricane Sandy and the bad weather this week, our city Trick or Treat has been rescheduled to Sunday, which nice. By the time Halloween festivities are over, Jameson will have worn his costume for 4 days! Lots of adorable pictures of him in Elmo.

Yesterday on Halloween we didn’t lack for Halloween celebration; I went to his school’s Halloween Party and took some photos. More on that to come!

Indian Summer

This week, at the very end of October, we had 70 degree weather. It was beautiful! I’m just sorry I missed seeing Jameson play outside all week, since I was away at a conference in Chicago. At the least, I got to enjoy similar nice weather there.

Last weekend, it was typical fall weather. I decided to take advantage of the empty lots around our house with their wonderful changing leaves before they were all gone. I’m pretty excited with how the photos turned out, and you’ll never believe that I’m holding Jameson’s hands in the close up pictures to get him to stay still. He thought it was all a hilarious game, which made for some awesome — though hard to get in focus — photos.

Jameson was running with one hand in his pocket naturally. He had a rock he picked up that he put in there. Also, his jacket is a little too short for him now from this spring, but the thickness and width of it are perfectly appropriate for fall, so we continue to use it.

That’s my little boy!

We also enjoyed pumpkin carving last weekend, though Jameson wasn’t sure about it. We decided to do it on the floor, so he had good visibility to what was going on.

We tried over and over to get him to reach his hands in the pumpkin, but he played hard to get and barely reached in. He would try to get at one seed instead of a fistful like mom. He wasn’t sure about the texture and temperature of the pumpkin seeds.

First I drew the face on the pumpkin (which I messed up the tooth, but Jameson didn’t care). Then Brian did the carving honors and we removed all the seeds and created the lid. Finally Brian did the face while we watched.

Jameson did like putting the lid back on the pumpkin!

When the pumpkin was finished and light shone through, Jameson was less intimidated; and when he dropped a sticker in it, he happily fished after it, reaching all the way in.

Neither Brian or I love pumpkin seeds, but I did save a few to bake for tradition. I tried a new recipe which I am pretty happy with. You bake the seeds as normal with a little salt, and then you caramelize them with sugar and oil in a skillet. Once the sticky sugar coats the baked seeds, you toss them in spices as you choose!

A lovely fall weekend, with more to come this weekend as indian summer leaves us today and probably for the final time. I am looking forward to seeing Jameson in his costume, going to Boo at the Zoo, and being back at home after a long week away.

Labor Day Weekend

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since Jameson’s first fair experience. He wasn’t even crawling yet; he sat and sucked his pacifier, looking at the pumpkins that weighed well over 50 times more than him.

This year, Jameson obviously had more opinion. When we took him out of his stroller, he insisted on staying out for a long time. My parents and sister made a trip up special for the fair and joined the fun as well. We are guessing that next year, he’ll insist on riding some of the rides.

He loved the pumpkins; I’m pretty excited to take him to a real pumpkin patch this year to have him pick his out. He was already was trying to pick them out at the fair!

We did the pumpkins first before it got too crowded, and quickly moved on to the animals which we had been promising him all morning long.

After all the animal noise practice, Jameson did say baa and moo, but didn’t say neigh for the horses until we were leaving.

In fact, he was actually most excited about the tractors. We walked over to them, and he said “wow!” and wanted to put his hands on all the wheels.

Jameson insisted on drinking out of adult water bottles instead of his own; we were concerned with his fluid intake since it was so hot (at least it was cloudy!), so for lunch he had some of my lemonade, which he loved.

We weren’t very methodical this year, looping around the same area a couple times. After lunch (traditional cavatelli and meatballs for myself and Meemaw), we walked back to the pumpkin area to look at the vegetable house and then back around to the kids animal barn where you can hold rabbits or chicks.

Jameson is very good at being gentle with small animals; at school, they occasionally bring in a chinchilla owned by one of the teachers which he enjoys. He lightly patted the bunny. And hey, look I’m in a photo!

Handwashing was the last step in our fair day. We wandered around a little after, but the sun came out and the heat quickly beat us back to our cars and to home. We grabbed a funnel cake and cotton candy to go. I let Jameson try the cotton candy later, but he wasn’t so sure about it, flavor or texture I’m not sure, but he tried to spit it back out and give it to me. Mmmm more for me!

Sunday my parents left after lunch, and Brian brewed in the afternoon. Jameson took a short nap but was easy to please with empty kegs, the bounce house, and cooling water from the brew process to play in. And for Labor Day, we visited a local festival, suffered along with Jameson after he refused a nap, and happily passed him to Brian’s parents and sister when they arrived for dinner later. All in all, a quick but satisfying long weekend!

Our Happy Fourth of July!

I’m interrupting our series of vacation photos in case you are feeling in need of some Jameson photos. Just in case.

Today, Brian and I are both back at work, but we did have yesterday off which I suppose makes it seem as if we had two Fridays this week. Not too shabby. Except today is not Friday, bummer.

So anyway, yesterday morning we went shopping for a little while to find new sandals for Jameson that covered his toes but could handle water, for daycare. We had success, and then wanted to take Jameson out to eat to try him out in public since we haven’t gone out since our minor disaster at Red Robin over the winter. (It is Red Robin, so I don’t know that he was too bad for that place)

Anyway, we couldn’t find a good place open, so we went to Wendy’s, and that went okay except Jameson didn’t want to eat anything other than french fries and paint with ketchup (not eat it). And sip out of dad’s water. We went home and offered him a cheese stick and a pouch of fruit, and then he took a nap.

When he awoke, since we were all getting dressed in our Independence Day finest, I decided it would be a great time for a family photo, since we really hadn’t had one since the winter. We no longer have the blank wall, so I moved us to the living room corner.

I was pretty happy with the results, though I am pushed against the wall a little bit in this photo, but because Jameson is smiling, it won out.

Not too many outtakes this time, but I loved this one of Jameson because he is so excited to pet Sasha!

Then it was time to go to my Aunt Carol’s house. They live a town over, but we often don’t seem them.

We also got to see my cousin Jerry and his wife Lisa and their kids, who also live right down the road from us but we don’t see them much; and my cousin Carrie and her husband Brian and their kids, who live in Maryland, were also there!

My cousin Stacey and her husband Chuck are moving away from Ohio, which is sad, but exciting for them, so we were also thrilled to see them.

(This is Carrie’s daughter Krista, and her Barbie pool, which Nicholas wanted to dump out and Jameson kept thinking was full of bubbles)

It was sweltering hot, so we didn’t stay out for too long! Jameson was very interested in the bubbles, as per his usual now. He had fun putting the bubble wand in and out of the container, which we emptied. It doesn’t seem to matter to him.

We were sorry to see Jerry, Lisa and the kids leave about a half hour after we arrived, but Nicholas was hilarious telling everyone bye very excited and animated!

It was a good excuse to make our way indoors to get relief from the heat! Sophia demonstrated her dress up clothes.

Stacey tells me that this was a flower girl dress from my mother’s wedding, which was funny. It’s on backwards, though Sophia insisted it wasn’t.

Jameson made himself comfortable pretty quick, which I was surprised at since he had seemed so shy in our recent cookout with friends last weekend (I have yet to share that with you).

Maybe it was the older girls? He does seem to love following around older children.

Time for supper! We had to sing Happy Birthday to the USA first at Sophia’s request. Then, the only thing he wanted to eat was watermelon. He didn’t want to try the pasta, which was strange, nor the hotdog.

He did try an olive though, he didn’t like it. But when I put it on his finger, he thought it was hilarious!

After dinner, there was a show. We heard Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, saw some dancing, and listened to some xylophone and electric guitar. All the stuffed animals came to watch.

It’s so easy to watch Jameson when he actually wants to stay in the same room as the other kids. Good fun!

It was a nice little reunion and Fourth of July, reminiscent of when I was a kid and we spent it with that same side of the family at my grandpa’s house. I don’t remember it ever being that hot though!
