Thanksgiving at Meemaw and Grandpa’s

This year, my brother brought his new dog for Thanksgiving at my parents’ house. We arrived Wednesday afternoon and were introduced to Athena (which he reminds us was the name she was already responding to, not perhaps he might have chosen for himself!) Athena was a rescue, and a pretty one at that. Her and Shiloh learned to play together while we were there, but old Mayzee was not as much of a fan.

20131127-Thanksgiving-1928

We celebrated Aunt Holly’s birthday that evening, early for December 4th. Jameson was of course a big helper.

Next, Jameson helped Meemaw make zucchini bread for Thanksgiving morning. Chopping the nuts was the best part, because he actually really likes them. He kept sneaking pieces to eat. And even though Meemaw forgot the butter, the bread came out healthier and just as delicious (with a slightly different consistency) as usual after an overnight wrapped in foil.

Jameson must’ve had about 4 pieces that next morning! We had the parade on, though Jameson wasn’t too interested in it (he just wanted to watch Monsters).

20131128-Thanksgiving-1948

Coraline got sniffed by the dogs over and over. Athena did really well with her first introduction to babies, though she wasn’t as good with Jameson, a quick, startling toddler. She nearly nipped at him once, which scared him, though by the end of the trip she was much better and he got better at being “brave” walking around her.

Ah! That’s not a sock!

Once the turkey was prepared and in the oven, there was time for play!

20131128-Thanksgiving-2019

This photo was pretty hilarious, with all three dogs in the picture.

20131128-Thanksgiving-2010

Jameson just loved Shiloh this trip. He kept requesting that she come with him to his room and to follow him. She wasn’t a great listener (she’s not for anyone), but it was still very cute. Jameson loved his room and wanted to play in it all the time because it is a big blow up mattress bed right on the floor! So much fun.

20131128-Thanksgiving-1958

Another fun thing at Meemaw’s house was the big cup. He wanted ice (the ice maker on the fridge there is a novelty for him) and then Meemaw found a straw to put in it, and it was impossible to get him to put it down for photos with Uncle Tyler.

20131128-Thanksgiving-1977

20131128-Thanksgiving-1997

Jameson and Grandpa practiced hopping on one leg while we waited to eat, and then Jameson played with Coraline’s toys (more interesting now that someone else wants to play with them). He also loved playing with the Little Tikes dollhouse van. It must be a vintage item at this point, but in great shape for playing with Duffy the bear.

Everyone ate their fill for Thanksgiving with our traditional turkey, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce (the jellied kind of course), stuffing and pie. Coraline even tried potatoes the first time! She’s had a couple solid foods now including peas, noodles, potatoes, and corn.

20131128-Thanksgiving-2057

20131128-Thanksgiving-2056

Friday, the boys all went to the Air Force Museum while Meemaw and I stayed home to do a special Christmas project. Coraline was great for us, though she was a little pooping machine!

She let Meemaw give her a bottle, and did really well over Thanksgiving with just the bottle feeding. We nursed in the morning but the rest of the days were all bottled fed. She’s showing some signs of wanting to hold it herself!

20131129-Thanksgiving-2066

20131129-Thanksgiving-2069

Jameson had a lot of fun at the museum, though he kept saying that some of the planes were broken when they weren’t allowed inside all of them. He came home with a little toy airplane and asked me how to fly it (certainly because Grandpa had been flying little quadcopters earlier!). Alas, this one can only be flown by hand.

20131130-Thanksgiving-2090

He even gave us a little concert that evening on the piano!

Our final morning was Saturday, so that we could have an extra day to unpack and relax before heading back to work. We relaxed in the morning, and Jameson got an early 3rd birthday gift from Uncle Tyler.

20131129-Thanksgiving-2081

20131130-Thanksgiving-2095

Coraline is still iffy driving any time past 30 minutes, so the way there was a little rough with a few stops, but both kids were amazing the way back! They both fell asleep for a time, and we didn’t even have to stop once. A first and last, most likely.

It was great seeing Uncle Tyler, who won’t be able to visit for Christmas this year, and fun to meet his new dog. We celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday, birthdays, did special projects and visited a museum. We even found time to do a little shopping (online and in store!)!

Slimey Pumpkins

We carved our pumpkins on Monday evening before Halloween this year. Brian has been doing a lot of extra work after hours, so it’s been difficult the last couple weeks to find the time to do this. I am so glad we did though! Jameson was hilarious.

20131028-Pumpkin-Carving-1126

20131028-Pumpkin-Carving-1131

I drew on the face, and Brian did the cutting. Jameson had to get his little knife from his kitchen set to help with that part too. I questioned him and he requested a sad face with two teeth and a big nose; then a scary face.

Jameson didn’t want to use his hands to take the pumpkin pulp and seeds out, though he did have some fun using the big spoon.

The best part was his squeals when Brian plopped pumpkin on his toes. I even got him on video. It’s too slimey he said (delightfully, I think; he enjoyed it)

20131028-Pumpkin-Carving-1128

When we were finished, we immediately took them out and lit them. Jameson loved going out in the dark to see them.

20131028-Pumpkin-Carving-1138

This year, I made some salted pumpkin seeds for Brian and some of the cinnamon spice ones that I made last year. They are so good! We only carved two of our four pumpkins, so we might actually cut up another one or two for some more seeds this season.

Scenic Ohio

A couple weekends ago, I went on a photography tour given by I Heart Faces during their conference for women in Columbus. It was a bit of a drive for me, but I was excited to be able to do the Amish Country Tour which was open to the public even though I couldn’t attend the rest of the conference.

20131004-Amish-Country-0528

20131004-Amish-Country-0527

We learned quite a lot about the Amish, and were very surprised by how well off the Amish are in Berlin, where we visited, which is the most toured Amish area in the country. Many Amish are no longer farmers.

20131004-Amish-Country-0530

20131004-Amish-Country-0538-2

We came across a wedding (above, with all the buggies lined up).

20131004-Amish-Country-0521

20131004-Amish-Country-0547

For lunch, we ate at an Amish case house, which is where they have church, weddings or other large gatherings. It was part of the property of an Amish couple and their farm and they graciously allowed us to photograph their land.

I did take a picture of their grandson outside the case house, respectfully avoiding his face. He captured our hearts with his adorable overalls.

I loved the spiderweb in this one, it took a bit of work to get into focus and visible.

20131004-Amish-Country-0654

20131004-Amish-Country-0656

Despite the trees not being quite in their full glory, the scenery was just beautiful, and we could’ve stopped every 5 minutes for another picturesque view.

We were able to do a little touristy shopping at the end, and it started raining then too, luckily after we had finished taking photos.

I loved exercising my camera and skills with landscapes, since I so frequently take photos of people. It was new for me, and editing was fun. Even better, I was able to stay overnight with friends while Coraline actually took a bottle at home for Brian. It felt very freeing, after feeling home-bound for so many months.

This photo was from a visit to a farm the following weekend; Ohio is beautiful in the fall.

Pumpkin Time

You know it’s fall when the fair begins!

Meemaw and Aunt Holly came up for the fair over Memorial Day weekend! This photo was the best we could do; it’s hard to get two little people to smile at the same time!

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3723

We hurried to the pumpkin to get photos before walking the rest of the fair. It’s great to get there early so there’s isn’t a line. This is the first year I’ve had two kids to fill both holes. Two is the perfect number, right? 🙂 See previous years here and here.

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3725

Coraline had already been up past her regular naps so she’s wasn’t super inclined to smile for me, but we had to get her sitting next to the big pumpkins. Jameson didn’t want to get up there next to her, but he did sit next to the smaller ones.

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3733

Obligatory photos over, we decided it wasn’t too early to eat! (It was 10:30-11) haha. We had some cavatelli with a meatball, our tradition. Jameson enjoyed some from my bowl. Brian decided to eat like a normal person and wait until lunch time proper.

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3735

Coraline had a hard time falling asleep and gnawed on her rings, her favorite toy.

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3739

Jameson didn’t really want to visit the animals much this year. He was a bit afraid to get close to the big ones! He did like the rabbits and chickens. He wanted to pet the chickens but we wouldn’t let him. Obviously!

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3744

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3746

What he really wanted to see was the tractors! He asked again and again until we went to go see all the farm equipment. This was probably his favorite.

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3778

There’s a baby animal building for kids near the tractors, so we got to hold a bunny again this year. Jameson kept telling me he wanted to hold the other one, because the one we were holding was getting fidgety. We gave it back pretty quickly.

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3783

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3787

After nursing outside the baby animals’ building, Coraline passed out. I loved her arm flung up over her head. It was so hot that day! We were all sweating like crazy.

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3793

After hitting the animal, tractor, pumpkin, and food highlights, there wasn’t much left but to hit the rest of the buildings like crafts, shops, and the old buggy displays. We didn’t do any rides this year or even all the sights; it was a little harder with Coraline who was becoming antsy when she was in her stroller for hours in the heat having trouble napping.

We did stop in the little toys booth and let Jameson pick out a toy. He selected a squeaky frog (which is better than fake poop, thank goodness)

20130831-Canfield-Fair-with-Meemaw-and-Aunt-Holly-3795-2

Brian and I left with the kids then while Meemaw and Aunt Holly stayed for a couple more hours. They stayed with us the whole next day though too which was fun!

Sunday, we made my mom’s homemade spaghetti sauce with tomatoes she brought up from the garden; we ate lots of zucchini bread which she baked for us before she arrived; and gave Coraline her first taste of a vegetable: sweet potato.

These final warm days are disappearing quickly, but I do love fall.

Grandma’s Birthday

We celebrated Grandma’s birthday at our house a couple weekends ago. I was pleased to get this shot of grandma and kiddos together. Coraline isn’t smiling; I can already tell how difficult it’s going to be to get both children smiling in the same photo.

20130817-Grandmas-Birthday-3243

Even Grandpa had some time to hold Coraline! She was observing him very intently.

20130817-Grandmas-Birthday-3255

20130817-Grandmas-Birthday-3262

Aunt Melissa came over to celebrate as well. We gave Coraline a bath and I loved getting a shot of her in her one girly pink towel I have for her. She is really loving her baths lately.

20130817-Grandmas-Birthday-3252

20130817-Grandmas-Birthday-3267

She always seems to have a hand by her face; I guess that is because she doesn’t take a pacifier. At least I’m not always tugging that out of her mouth like I did with Jameson!

Coraline is discovering noises and balance lately. We’ve seen less rolling (a little less; she still rolls a lot more than Jameson ever did) and more activity with hands and sitting. Here she is doing the airplane move!

Jungle Garden

I am past due to show you an update to our garden! This has been one of our most successful garden, which I credit to the raised beds we made. We have had snap peas from our garden about 4 times, and loads of cherry, olive and yellow pear shaped tomatoes. I just started getting some Roma and Early Girl tomatoes which are larger. We’ve had batches of green beans, plenty of basil and cleaned up our lettuce. Radishes we finished a couple months ago; they were quick to mature and quick to eat!

Still to mature are our carrots and green onions which I planted from seed. We’ve had just a few small peppers but looking forward to more. The peppers may be the only veggies that aren’t growing as well as hoped.

20130720-Backyard-Garden-2752

20130720-Backyard-Garden-2753

20130720-Backyard-Garden-2756

Since we fenced off the garden to keep deer out, the grass grows much taller there. This guy found a home in our garden then for a few weeks. However, since Brian put him over the privacy fence, we haven’t seen him back, so he must not have been able to find his way home.

The first time we saw him I screamed (like a girl, obviously). Jameson was with us and I flung him over the fence and tiptoed out myself; It was nearly ready to rain though so Becky, Coraline, Jameson and I all ran for the garage. I think I scared Jameson a bit between the screaming, fence swinging and running!

20130720-Backyard-Garden-2746

20130720-Backyard-Garden-2747

20130720-Backyard-Garden-2748

Jameson didn’t want to hold him but he did touch him a couple times. I even did as well. I was okay with the snake… as long as I knew exactly where he was at all times! He is a harmless type snake local to our area but I’m just as happy to see him gone now.

On top of this, we’ve been enjoying our weekly crop share program and getting loads of veggies from the Farmers Market as well!

We had a 3 week hiatus, but it’s back again the past couple weeks and we’ve enjoyed everything in our boxes. We’ve had turnips, kale, potatoes and radishes, lettuce, beans, 3 different kinds of peas and we’re just starting to get zucchini, cucumber, garlic and tomatoes from it.

20130727-Crop-Share-Week-7-2897

It’s been such a good, healthy summer and I love to tell Jameson where our food is coming from every night when we sit down for dinner. We introduced prayers before eating in the past 3 weeks and Jameson has learned to wait until everyone sits down before eating and loves to say prayers with us. He loves to end it with an extra “Amen! We eat!”

Yum!

Fireworks and Family

20130704-4th-of-July-2200

20130704-4th-of-July-2235

Our 4th of July was the most relaxing day (with kids) that you can have. We were scheduled for nothing and barely left the house. I dressed up the kids for pictures (an event in itself, I suppose). Coraline was at the perfect stage where not everything goes in her mouth because she doesn’t have that kind of coordination yet and so I could give her the flag, which she did hold some though she got really distracted looking at it when she did.

Jameson loved waving the flag and sat still with the promise of Pez candy. Yep.

Friday we had some other activities which I will share shortly, but focusing on our Independence Day celebrations, we went over to my Aunt Carol’s for dinner Friday evening and spent time with my cousin Carrie, husband Brian and their daughters.

20130705-First-Fireworks-2303

20130705-First-Fireworks-2306

Jameson loves the little ladies! He enjoyed spending time with his cousins so much, and I’m so thankful we were able to go see fireworks with them so that they occupied some of his attention in the two hours we spent there waiting for them to start!

Aunt Carol selected a spot far enough away that the boom from the fireworks didn’t generate any vibration and wasn’t too loud for Jameson. We did bring his earmuffs just in case but we didn’t need to use them even after he had initially told us he was afraid.

20130705-First-Fireworks-2325

We were not prepared with bug spray since we usually aren’t out that late with the kids we didn’t think about it. Luckily Carrie brought some and sprayed Jameson down for his very first bug spray experience. I’m not sure it mattered; even with bug spray on and an additional dose, all the mosquitos seemed most attracted to me and I ended up with rows of bites behind my knees, on my ankles and arms. At least there were none on my face this time.

Jameson enjoyed popcorn and visiting the firetruck that arrived. He slowly turned into a little crazy person the further from bedtime we got. He squealed, jumped, ran around and played with his cousins.

20130705-First-Fireworks-2344

20130705-First-Fireworks-2347

Then periodically he would just collapse onto Brian to rest for a moment before he was back at it!

20130705-First-Fireworks-2356

20130705-First-Fireworks-2358

Coraline passed out in the car on the way to the spot and stayed asleep the entire time, I was amazed! Coraline was protected from the bugs with a muslin blanket over top the already covered stroller so there were no openings for them to find and that seemed to work well. Neither of the kids ended up with any bug bites!

20130705-First-Fireworks-2385

They gave out glow bracelets which Jameson enjoyed immensely, and then it was finally too dark for me to use my camera without flash. Which meant — fireworks soon!

20130705-First-Fireworks-2403

20130705-First-Fireworks-2407

20130705-First-Fireworks-2409

Jameson gave us his usual solemn, intent stare face when he saw them which is the face that new things he experiences get.

And then, he became a little maniac again…

20130705-First-Fireworks-2411

The fireworks weren’t too long, so then we were able to head home (with the addition of a new toy for Coraline the cousins outgrew); Jameson passed out in seconds and was home in bed by 11.

Birthday Boy

On Brian’s birthday, his parents and sister came over. Coraline was dressed to impress Grandma with her I <3 Grandma shirt on.

Jameson insisted on blowing out the “birthday” candle again, as we did for my birthday. In fact, he got it out as soon as everyone arrived. We told him he had to wait for the candle until later but that we would sing happy birthday. We sang, and then Jameson immediately asked for cake! No no, not yet!

20130525-Brians-Birthday-1321

Grandma brought over a fruit salad which Jameson wanted to dig right into while Grandpa and Dad finished the ribs off on the grill. This boy was obviously hungry.

Happy Birthday Daddy

These spontaneous and unposed! photos were oh so adorable, missing sleeves and all, until Coraline got a little fussy and Brian flipped her over. Even Jameson wanted to get flipped over too then, and the pose was perfect…

… except for the big mess of poo up Coraline’s back. And on Brian’s shirt. And on the bouncer the Brian had lifted her from 10 minutes before (yes that’s right, he missed the big yellow spot on the bouncer when he picked her up)

Then it was just hilarious.

We love you, daddy!

Golden Evenings

In the evenings the past couple weeks we’ve been working on the garden (now finally planted!), and playing outside. We’ve had near a week straight of beautiful high 60s and 70s weather with just a little breeze to keep it comfortable. And of course, the sun makes such beautiful golden light in the evenings.

We have let Jameson stay up a little later than he usually wood, but that’s okay. It’s totally worth it to see that wide, open mouthed smile.

Brian just took him to get his hair cut the other week (first time at a non-kids oriented salon), so I am particularly enjoying these photos of him swinging with his hair flying wild in the wind.

I am sure I will love our evenings even more when I return to work. For now, I just enjoy all our family together in the evenings, and the ability to take Coraline out in the dying sunlight since I usually run for shade for her. It’s a wonderful time.
